Biography:
Born and raised in Singapore, Jia Yu How-VanderMeer’s musical journey started at the age of four with piano lessons. Her passion for teaching blossomed at the age of 17 and she has been teaching ever since. Her students range from ages four to adults. She is currently a member of the Indianapolis Piano Teachers Association (IPTA), MTNA, and GIMTA. Students of Ms. J.Y. have successfully auditioned for and gotten accepted into colleges for their music programs, and consistently received Superior and Excellent ratings at the NFMC Festival and IAF (Indiana Arts Festival). In addition, she firmly believes in continuing education and does so by attending programs and conferences.
As a performer, Ms. J.Y. has been part of many professional and semi-professional ensembles, which include the Dayton Opera Chorus, the Dayton Philharmonic Chorus, the Dayton Philharmonic Chamber Choir, the Singapore Symphony Chorus, the Singapore Lyric Opera, and Evansville Bach Singers. Her choral experiences since secondary school has brought her to compete in various European cities such as Olomouc, Czech Republic, and Krakow, Poland. In college, she was a winner of the 2013 Vukovich Concerto Competition.
Other soloist performances include Handel's Messiah and Rutter's Requiem.
Ms. J.Y.'s studio intake is limited as she finds that she is a better teacher with a well balanced work-life schedule. She is able to 100% focus on each student during and outside of lessons, research on repertoire that works best for every one of them, and continues to learn about different pedagogical ideas.
Ms. J.Y. received her Bachelor’s Degree in Music from the University of Evansville, and a Diploma in Music from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore. She currently lives in the Zionsville/Whitestown area with her husband, toddler boy, and furbaby, and teaches out of her home studio. Besides her passion for music, she loves to cook and is a huge Disney fan. HUGE.
